Ishmael Coye

Ishmael’s passion for barbering began at age twelve, blending his inherent love for fine art and technical precision into expressive, tailored haircuts. By high school, he was booking weekly appointments for neighborhood peers from a makeshift barbershop setup in his mother’s bathroom.

Early Journey & Mastery

Driven by a commitment to formal craft, Ishmael earned his cosmetology license in 1992 and joined Hyde Park Hair Salon at twenty years old—becoming the shop’s youngest barber. Over decades behind the chair, he refined classical razor techniques, modern tapering, and individualized client consultation, eventually ascending to lead barber.

Ownership & Leadership

In 2007, Ishmael stepped into complete ownership of the institution. Under his leadership, Hyde Park Hair Salon navigated its historic relocation to 5234 S. Blackstone Avenue following the redevelopment of the Hyde Park Theatre building. He personally ensured the preservation of original elements—including classic leather chairs and architectural details—while expanding modern grooming standards.

A Cultural Anchor on the South Side

Beyond technical execution, Ishmael views the barbershop as a vital community sanctuary and town square. Over his thirty-year career on Blackstone Avenue, he has cultivated an environment of trust where world leaders, University of Chicago scholars, local families, and multi-generational patrons gather for precision haircuts and authentic dialogue.
